IRS CP14 notice: balance due and payment date

A CP14 means the IRS shows unpaid tax on your account and is asking you to pay by the date on the notice. Before you pay, set up a plan or question it, make sure the balance and tax year look right.

A tax professional reviews your actual notice and sends a written action plan, typically in 1–3 business days. The full $249 counts toward the $599 or $799 Assessment if you upgrade within 30 days. Questions first? Call (256) 690-0213.

What a CP14 means

The IRS sends a CP14 because it shows money owed on unpaid taxes. The notice explains how much is owed and how to pay. If your address is in a federally declared disaster area, you may get a CP14C instead, which gives extra time automatically.

What to check on your notice

  • The tax year and form the balance is for
  • The amount, and whether payments you made are reflected
  • The date to pay
  • The IRS phone number in the help section

Your options, according to the IRS

  • Pay in full by the date on the notice. The IRS says you aren't charged interest if you pay the full amount by that date.
  • Set up a payment plan if you can't pay in full. See payment plans and Form 9465.
  • Temporary delay of collection may be possible in financial hardship.
  • Offer in compromise in some cases. See Form 656.

If you can't pay in full or you disagree

Interest accrues on any unpaid amount after the date on the notice, and a late payment penalty applies. The IRS asks you to contact them by the due date if you can't pay in full. If you disagree, call the number on your notice with your records, such as cancelled checks or an amended return, ready.
